More about this work:
Gold Saddle 02 is constructed from the components of a dismantled leather saddle, carefully taken apart, cleaned and reassembled alongside materials including plastic, rubber, brass, ceramic, timber and folded paper.
In working with the saddle, I pay close attention to how it was originally made — exposing layers of stitching, padding, reinforcement and areas of wear. Rather than concealing these details, I allow them to remain visible as part of the structure and surface of the work.
The process is intuitive and hands-on, guided by the physical relationship between forms and materials. Elements are arranged by feel rather than fixed plan, with the composition emerging gradually through adjustment and response. Although the final form appears symmetrical and formally composed, its structure developed incrementally through making.
The finished work functions as a unified, contemporary object, while quietly retaining traces of its former life. Scuffs, seams, curves and patina remain present — carrying forward the physical memory embedded in the material itself.
