Vintage timber intrays, cloth book covers

1000 x 760 x 150 cm

“I think I work well with symmetry and structure,” Dean notes. “I like a crisp edge and a nice join rather than frayed or irregular finishes—it works better on the eye.”

Intrays is constructed from a set of matching timber office trays, originally sourced from a farm near Madura Tea in Clothiers Creek, NSW. They were sitting at the front gate of the property and I left payment in the letterbox so I never met the owners directly.

The uniformity of the trays provided a strong structural base, allowing symmetry and repetition to guide the composition.

The cloth-bound book covers introduce subtle texture and variation within a restrained and ordered framework. A gentle gradient moves across the panels, shifting between shades within a single tonal range.

The work reflects an interest in graphic design, architecture, and clean construction—where precision becomes a form of quiet expression.
